RALEIGH – In a move that bridges past and present, Shaw University has announced the return of Greg Ruffin as head football coach of the Bears program. This appointment marks a homecoming for Ruffin, who previously led the team during its historic resurrection in 2002, when he guided the Bears to an impressive 7-3 record in their inaugural season after a 23-year program hiatus.
Ruffin brings over three decades of collegiate coaching experience to Shaw, most recently serving as running backs coach and recruitment coordinator at Alabama State University. Ruffin's coaching journey includes notable achievements at several historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). His six-season tenure at Jackson State University contributed to a SWAC championship in 2007 and a conference runner-up finish in 2009.
The significance of Ruffin's return extends beyond his previous success at Shaw. Throughout his career, he has become something of a specialist in program resurrection, having been instrumental in reviving football programs at both Shaw and Lincoln University. His experience in building programs from the ground up brings valuable perspective to a Shaw program looking to establish itself as a consistent competitor.
Athletic Director George Knox emphasized Ruffin's alignment with the university's vision, particularly noting his commitment to developing student-athletes and establishing a championship culture. The appointment comes at a crucial time for Shaw's football program, as the university seeks to build upon its historic legacy while pushing forward into a new era.
