The East Carolina Pirates and App State Mountaineers are set to face off in an exciting college football game this Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina. The game is expected to draw a large crowd, following the Mountaineers's impressive performance in their home opener against Gardner-Webb and a thrilling double-overtime game on the road against No. 17 North Carolina.
The upcoming game holds special significance as it marks
East Carolina's first visit to Kidd Brewer Stadium since November 3, 1979. The
Mountaineers and Pirates agreed to a four-game series in January 2017, with App
State hosting games in 2021 and 2023, while ECU will host games in 2024 and
2026. The 2021 game was the first meeting between the two teams as members of
the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). In their previous encounter two seasons
ago, a Thursday night crowd of 36,752 witnessed an exciting matchup between the
Pirates and the Mountaineers in Charlotte. App State emerged victorious with a 33-19
win after overcoming an early ECU touchdown.
The overall series between East Carolina and Appalachian State has been closely contested, with the Mountaineers holding a slight advantage. Out of the 29 meetings that took place between 1932 and 1979, App State won the first ten games and seventeen of the first twenty. However, ECU turned the tide with a 38-21 victory in Boone in 1979. The two teams did not face each other again until 2009 when ECU secured a 29-24 home win. Notably, star quarterback Armanti Edwards was sidelined during that game due to a preseason injury. In another matchup in 2012, ECU emerged victorious with a 35-13 win at home.
The upcoming clash between East Carolina and Appalachian State promises to be an intense battle between two talented teams. Both sides will be eager to secure a victory and build momentum early in the season. Fans can expect an electric atmosphere at Kidd Brewer Stadium as they witness this historic rivalry unfold.
