CHARLOTTE – The Charlotte 49ers won their second game in
history Saturday as they defeated the visiting Chowan Hawks. The Niners came up
big on offense, defense, and special teams on their way to a 47-7 victory.
Offensively, redshirt freshman Matt Johnson (Maiden) threw
for five touchdowns, raising his season total to eight. A target of two of the
touchdown passes in this game was Austin Duke (Independence). Kalif Phillips
(A.L. Brown), Trent Bostick (Richmond) and Corey Nesmith, Jr. (West
Mecklenburg) all scored a touchdown for the second game in a row.
On defense, Mark Hogan collected his second interception of
the season, one of five Chowan turnovers forced by the 49ers defense. Linebacker
Micah Bryan (East Wilkes) was everywhere on the field on Saturday, collecting
six tackles (two for loss), a sack, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Mikel Hunter made history for the 49ers on special teams,
returning the first kickoff for a touchdown. The 96 yard return in the second
quarter was the first in team history.
The 49ers finish up their three game home stand to start the
season against North Carolina Central next Saturday at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
