It’s the second week of the season, and for football teams it’s time to get back to business on the field. School has started for all of the football teams in North Carolina, and a hurricane is threatening the eastern part of the state. Luckily, our game of the week is in the western part of the state. Some schools like to schedule non-conference games against lesser competition that are easily winnable and rarely challenging. Lincolnton and South Point are not those teams. The matchup between the Red Raiders and the Wolves is our game of the week for Week 2.
South Point is two games into the Mickey Lineberger era and if the result of their week one game is any indication, the Red Raiders can play some serious football. A 63-0 blowout of SC rival Clover showed that South Point has not missed a beat offensively or defensively. The Red Raiders are known for their Red Bone option offense that can leave defensive players shaking their heads. Defensively, South Point is led by All-Gridiron defensive back Ramon Costner who has the ability to make an opposing offensive coordinator change their plans for throwing the ball.
Scott Cloninger’s Lincolnton Wolves have been in the hunt for the 2A state title almost every year in the past five years or so. The Wolves also faced a traditional rival last week in always tough Maiden. The Wolves prevailed 35-10 over the Blue Devils and are led on offense by All-Gridiron running back Dee Littlejohn and athlete Michael Cunningham. Defensively, the Wolves play aggressively and their overall team speed can make special teams the difference in any game. It looks to be a great game on Von Ray Harris Field this Friday night.
